76ers rookie Jahlil Okafor calls Boston street fight ‘dumb’

It was dumb.

That’s what 76ers rookie Jahlil Okafor said Friday after he was caught on video getting into a fight on the streets of Boston Wednesday night.

“It was definitely dumb on my part,” Okafor said following the winless team’s shootaround Friday in Houston. “Something I’m embarrassed about. Still dealing with the league and the team but I’m not happy about it all. We’re still going through the process of what we’re going to do.”

Video of the incident was obtained by TMZ Sports and went public on Thanksgiving.

Okafor, who reportedly was set off by a heckler who yelled “the 76ers suck” is expected to play Friday night against the Rockets.

“I’m ashamed with what I did and that’s not who I am,” Okafor said. “Everybody that reached out to me that’s in my circle they know that’s not who I am. So I have a great support system and they will continue to support me.”

Okafor, 19, who was the Sixers’ top pick (third overall) in June’s NBA Draft out of Duke, is part of a Philadelphia team that has lost the first 16 games of the season.

Jahlil Okafor says he’s embarrassed after he got into a street fight in Boston on Wednesday.

Boston police said Friday they do not plan to investigate the incident unless someone comes forward to say they were a victim of the crime.

Okafor told reporters that he fessed up to Sixers coach Brett Brown on the team’s flight to Houston.

“This is not something that we dismiss,” Brown said. “We pay attention. We walk that line of doing what we need to to help educate and discipline anybody and help them understand if the situation were to present itself again how are you going to handle it.”

The 37-second clip shows the NBA rookie yelling at a group that allegedly taunted him as he exited the Boston Storyville nightclub with teammate Christian Wood. The ugly scene took place after the 76ers loss to the Celtics Wednesday night.
